Litter League – the worst Towns in Ireland

Tallaght is the dirtiest town in Ireland – that’s according to “Irish Business Against Litter “  They are an alliance of companies who say they share a sharing a belief that continued economic prosperity  is contingent on a clean, litter-free environment. As part of the IBAL Anti-Litter League, An Taisce monitors all towns of population 6,000 and over, independently in accordance with international grading standards.

The first round of results were published today and 3 towns came out as being Litter Blackspots. These towns were  Tullamore , Roscommon and worst of all was Tallaght .
The towns of Bray , Ballina,  Cobh,  Enniscorthy,  and Longford did not come out too well  either – they were all classed as Seriously Littered.

Slightly better – but still classed as Littered were the towns of Athy, Kilkenny ,Limerick City, Cork City, Ranelagh and  Mallow
Ennis came out top of the League out of  55 towns and cities in Ireland.

Dirty Old Towns…

Most of the date used on this site is from the Census – but a recent interesting  litter survey was published on all towns in Ireland with more than 6000 population.
The littering survey ranked the 50 towns in order of cleanest first, The full table is shown below (From the Irish Business Against Litter). Sligo came out worst (dirtiest) and Dundalk came out the best (cleanest)

Bray is losing it’s Religion

Bray has 7.77% of it’s population who stated they had no religion in the 2006 census. This is the highest out of all Irish towns (with pop. over 5000)
In Ireland as a whole  4.39% of the population stated they had no religious faith.

Greystones  7.62%
Galway City  7.48%
Greater Dublin Area  7.01%
Skerries  6.23%

Chinese prefer Bray

There were 16250 people of Chinese ethnic origin living in Ireland at the 2006 census. This is 0.4% of the population.
Bray has the highest proportion of Chinese  with 1.42% .
Athlone is the next highest with 0.99% and the Greater Dublin area has 0.98% of residents with Chinese ethnic origin.
Kells (Ceannanus Mor) is the least popular town for Chinese people – 0.058% or just 3 people. That is slightly lower than the whole Rural area which has 0.064% Chinese.

The total population of Ireland at the 2006 census was 4,239,848
Sixty one percent live in towns or cities (2,574,313) and thirty nine percent live in rural Ireland. (1,665,535)
1,045,769 people live in Greater Dublin – 24.7% of the population.
