Census figures show that the town of Portrane has the highest percentage of people who are unable to work because of illness or disability. The figures show that 20.75% of the workforce are in this category. The average for the whole of Ireland is just 4.1% – so Portrane’s  population is almost 5 times more likely to be unable to work because if ill health than the rest of the country.

One reason for this would be the presence of   St Ita’s Psychiatric Hospital
