People living in  some unfinished housing estates will be given a waiver  from the Household Charge which came into effect on Jan 1st 2012.

Unfinished Ghost Estates and the Household Charge

We are still waiting for the list of unfinished estates that will be exempt from the 2012 Household Charge.
The total number of estates is expected to be less than 1300. The Irish Independent seems to think it will be less than 300 estates.

It is important to note – that even if your house is in one of the infamous Unfinished Estates – you still need to register for the Household Charge and then claim the exemption. If you don’t register you could be fined.

If you live in a dwelling that is not permanently attached to the ground – i.e a boat or a caravan – you do not need to register it for the household tax.

Tipperary lags behind in Information Technology

The town of Tipperary is behind the rest of Ireland when it comes to Information Technolgy. Census 2006 figures showed that  just 11.4% of Tipperary households had broadband and 71.84% of households had no internet access at all. This is the highest percentage of any town in Ireland  (National average 51.7%)
Also – just 36.35% of households owned a personal computer  compared  to the national average of  53.5%.
The high proportion of rented accommodation might be one of the reasons for these figures.

Ballyhaunis in Co. Mayo has the largest percntage of Asian born residents – based on census 2006 figures. Asian born make up 9.9% of the population of Ballyhaunis, Nearby  Ballaghaderreen has the next highest at 7.42%.

Construction Workers in Ireland

The building and construction sector accounts for 8.69% of all the employment in Ireland – according to responses in the 2006 Census.

Some towns depend much more on construction for jobs than others – and could be harder hit if the slowdown in house building continues.

Gort – in Galway has a massive 23% of it’s workforce employed in building – almost one quarter of all jobs in the town.
